About Two Sides of a Cypress Wall

  • Despite a solid GPA, several glowing letters of recommendation, and being named “Outstanding News-Editorial Graduate” by his journalism professors, no one seemed to care about Joel Frey after he completed his undergraduate studies.

With no employer seeking his “semi-professional” services, he left school behind and crashed with his mom and dad. He worked a couple of jobs that did not require a degree. He drank too much and escaped to the comfort of old friends whenever the opportunity arose. Most of all, he wondered what it was going to take to shake off the desire to be nothing more than a carefree college kid.

Two Sides of a Cypress Wall is a bittersweet story of coping with the discovery that life in your early twenties is more than just finding a real job.

    Posting Printing Rulz

I made it home to Gar and Vi's earlier this afternoon and, shortly thereafter, Dad and I headed to Post Printing on Park Avenue to get our first look at the finished version of Two Sides of a Cypress Wall. Mr. Johnson greeted us, invited us into his office, shut the door, and handed me the copy on his desk. I could not be more pleased with the look, feel, and overall quality of the final product!!! I must have said "wow" a dozen times in a sixty second period.

As is usually the case with any "big" moment, it was a blur. There were back-slaps, utterances of "congratulations," and I took a snap shot with both men, realizing that I would not have been standing there had it not been for their blood, sweat, and tears. I also thought back to a day in January 2006, the last time I walked into Post Printing and discussed the project with Mr. Johnson for the first time.

We then headed to the back of the shop and greeted Mrs. Johnson who I have also been keeping busy lately. After loading the boxes into my Pathfinder, we hung around for a few minutes and visited with the Johnsons. As many of you know, their son Ruston's name appears in Cypress Walls throughout and they mentioned that while collating the pages, they stopped several times when they ran across his name. Assuredly, they both now feel more educated about their son's life back in 1996 and 1997. We shared a couple of more laughs before Gar and I left them with a "See you tomorrow night."

    Enjoy your holiday weekend!
